【What is Sanriku International art festival?】

The Sanriku coastal region, which was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, is where a treasure trove of performing arts unparalleled anywhere in the world.
The Sanriku International Art Festival which hastarted in 2014, is held in the Sanriku coastal area (approx. 5,700㎢) from Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture to Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, as an art festival that fuses Japanese and international artists with the vast nature of Sanriku, focusing on the appeal of performing arts that have taken root through generations of traditions and are passed on from generation to generation. In 2018, the Sanriku International Arts Promotion Committee was established by 15 municipalities in Sanriku, Sanriku Railway Company, and private organizations specializing in culture and the arts, with the aim of deepening cooperation with the local community and creating an arts festival that is rooted in each region. By holding the festival in the form of an international arts festival, Sanriku’s performing arts, Geinoh, will have a chance to connect with the world, and through exchanges with diverse cultures, we are working for creative recovery from the disaster through culture and art.
