Route: From Tokyo to Ninohe to Noda to Miyako to Morioka to Tokyo

We have prepared a 2-night, 3-day (optional 3-night, 4-day) tour of northern Iwate Prefecture in conjunction with the Sanriku Nodamura Future Performing Arts Festival and the Nodamura Meeting for Geinoh Beginnings and Beyond, two major events of the Sanriku International Arts Festival 2023 Utsuru, which will be held in Noda Village, Iwate, to foster the next generation of performing artists.

Entering from Ninohe City, the northern gateway of the vast Iwate Prefecture, you’ll get to enjoy factory tours of Iwate’s famous specialties such as Nanbu Senbei and the renowned Nanbu Bijin sake. On the second day, you’ll head to Kuji City, known as a filming location for the NHK drama “Amachan,” where you can savor an elusive Uni Bento (sea urchin boxed lunch) and experience the local vibrancy firsthand. Then, in Noda Village, you’ll participate in a meeting to create a new future for performing arts and the region alongside the young generation that sustains the future of entertainment in the Sanriku coastal area, and on the last day, enjoy the Future Performing Arts Festival of the youth held at an outdoor park in Noda Village.

The folk performing arts festival focuses on young performers who are responsible for the future of the Tohoku and Sanriku regions. This year, it will be held in Noda Village in Iwate Prefecture.

Noda Village is located in the northeastern coastal area of Iwate Prefecture. This village has the “salt road” where precious salt was carried on the backs of cattle (cows), and deployed throughout the region by crossing the harsh Kitakami mountains. Noda is also the home of traditions which state that “namomi”demons that the gods use fall from the mountains during the First Full Moon Festival. The area has a history of being hit by numerous natural disasters such as tsunamis and famine. Village ancestors never gave up in the face of these hardships, carving a path to the future by engraving messages on stone monuments and enjoying arts and events.

This festival of folk performing arts features a gathering of highly talented young performers in a future-oriented seaside outdoor park in Noda Village. These performers have expansive discussions about the arts which color the culture of each region.

These local arts are packed with the techniques, strength, and wisdom for life in these areas.  Create a new future for the region with new arts at Noda Village, where you can find new techniques, strength, wisdom, and people.

Jijokobo Shiki no Sato/Northern Chocolate Factory

~Jijokobo Shiki no Sato~

Iwateya, a well-established producer of Nanbu Senbei rice crackers, built this eatery to provide its retired employees with a sense of purpose and an opportunity to work. They use locally sourced buckwheat from Iwate Prefecture, hull and grind it with stone mills, and make soba noodles by hand with the freshly milled flour, serving only soba made on the same day. Ninohe is one of the leading regions for chicken production in Japan, making its chicken tempura and other dishes popular choices as well.

Northern Chocolate Factory

The factory and store of Iwateya, a long-established producer of Nanbu Senbei rice crackers, located next to Jijokobo Shiki no Sato. In addition to simple rice crackers made from ingredients like sesame and peanuts, they have been consistently creating innovative products that go beyond the traditional round Nanbu Senbei, such as the “Choco Nanbu,” which features crushed peanut rice crackers coated in pure chocolate, and the “Warishimi Choco Senbei.” Visitors can observe the manufacturing process through glass windows here, and there is also a hands-on corner where you can make your own rice cracker cups, and a café space.

Basenkyo

~Ninohe’s Symbol, Revealing Its Beauty with Each Season~

A scenic spot featuring cliffs and rocks overlooking the Mabechi River. It boasts the largest “married couple” rocks that have been designated as a national scenic site of Japan, featuring a Male Deity Rock (180m) and Female Deity Rock (160m). The landscape viewed from the bridge and along the national road is magnificent and stunning, and the view from the observatory is also breathtaking. One of the highlights of the area is the fact that it is covered with deciduous forests, offering a different charm in every season.
