Visiting Otsuchi Shrines and Temples

This is a guided tour of historic shrines and temples in Otsuchi. In the Edo era, due to the contributions from the wealthy merchant Maekawa Zenbei, Otsuchi thrived as Otsuchi-tohri, which governed a region that stretched from a part of Miyako City in the north to Kamaishi City in the south, with Otsuchi Daikansho (located in the current town hall) as the center of the government. Because of that prosperity and despite the far distance from Edo (Tokyo today), there are still many treasures in Otsuchi that were created by well-known Buddhist sculptors and calligraphers. This tour appeals to a wide variety of audiences, including history enthusiasts.
