Sanriku Station is a station building overlooking Okirai Bay. The New Okirai Hills Café in New Okirai is a café run by local residents.
Shiome
A colorful and unique place that appears just outside Sanriku Station.
The building and objects are made from the remains and rubble and emergency stairs of the former Okirai Elementary School, where all the teachers and students survived from massive tsunami in 2011.
It also serves as a playground for children, a gathering place for local residents, and a resting place for hikers on the Michinoku Shiokaze Trail.
It is named “Shiome” meaning current rip, in the hope that it will become a place where people can interact with each other, just like a tide pool where many fish gather when ocean currents of different currents collide.

Takada Matsubara Reconstruction Memorial Park
This park was established to mourn and repose the souls of the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake 2011, and to pass on the memories and lessons of the disaster to the next generation.
There are the remains of the earthquake, Miracle Pine Tree (now a monument), and a folklore facility exhibiting materials from the disaster.
It will be 15 years since the earthquake on March 11, 2026, and this is a must-visit place.
