“Learning Shichifukujin (The Seven Gods of Fortune)” at Massaki Nursery School
9:30 – 11:00 am

We will learn the local folk performing art “Shichifukujin” (The Seven Gods of Fortune) from children at the Massaki Nursery School!! I think this is something that has not been tried by anyone until now.

In the town of Massaki, there are slightly different versions of “Shichifukujin”’s choreography for each region, and it is said that they begin learning it from around the age of 3. Our teachers are the 5-year-old upperclassmen. The dance is in their bodies so much so that you would be surprised that this sort of thing exists. Then, we will completely learn the song (it is quite long, and I don’t understand it even if I listen to it), and be able to sing it without looking at the words. These kids are 5-years-old!! However, they have a 3-year-long career!

We learned “Shichifukujin” from the children for 2 days, and for the next 2 days we learned the local folk performing art song “GoIwai” (Celebration) together with the children from a local fisherman, Cecilia made choreography for that song, and on the fifth day of November 2nd, we put on a recital where we performed our “Shichifukujin” and danced while singing “GoIwai” with everybody.
At the beginning of the first day, we had our 5-year-old “teachers” show us their dancing.
