Taneyama) at the top, spanning Oshu City, Sumida Town, Kesen County, and Tono City, Iwate Prefecture. Kenji Miyazawa was fascinated by the scenery and weather of the Taneyama Plateau area and visited the area many times, leaving behind many works, including “Kaze no Matasaburo. The area can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons along a well-maintained promenade starting from the visitor center, Yurin Land Taneyama, and Roadside Station Taneyamagahara. Rokando Cave
Rokando Cave has one of the largest waterfalls in Japan inside of its cave called Amano-Iwato Waterfall, which falls 29 meters at the innermost part of the cave. The cave is currently open to the public for 880 meters from the entrance to the Amano-Iwato Waterfall, but the cave continues onward, and two waterfalls and a deep underground lake with an invisible bottom have been discovered.
(The name “Amano-Iwato-no-Taki” was given in 1958 by a female poet, Yanagihara Hakuren, who was impressed by the waterfall hidden deep in the cave, which resembled the goddess Amaterasu in Japanese mythology.)
Because of its unique atmosphere, it was used as a location for horror film “The Village of Eight Gravestones” in 1977, where an important scene that unravels the story was filmed.
