【4 Days/3 Nights】 Tour of Northern Handicrafts: A trip to enjoy the Hirono town Geinoh Festival

ItineraryTokyo - Ninohe - Kuji - Hirono - Hachinohe - Tokyo
The forests of Iwate Prefecture are rich in broad-leaved trees, and woodworks and lacquered crafts making using those trees have been handed down through the generations. On the way to Hirono town, the tour will stop at Joboji temple and a center of lacquer and lacquer crafts "Ono Campus" in Hirono town, to experience woodworking, ceramics, and Sakiori weaving. The Ono Campus has a restaurant, accommodations, hot baths, and an observatory, making it a great place to spend the day. On the following day, you will visit the local Geinoh Museum to learn about Nanbu Diving, and after enjoying the Hirono town Geinoh Festival, head north to Hachinohe for the return trip to home. If you have extra time, it is recommended to visit Hachinohe Enburi performance, which will be held from the 17th (there will be another event on the 16th at midnight). Tendaiji Temple Observation Tour
A historic Tendai Buddhist temple in northeastern Tōhoku, known for its roughly hewn Nata-bori statue of the Sacred Kannon (Shō-Kannon). No Buddhist statues dating from the Heian period (794-1185)
exist northern than this site in Japan (except for those were moved later). For this reason, it is said to be the most northern Buddhist image introduced in Japan.

Lacquerware workshop specializing in Jōbōji lacquer. Tekiseisha Observation Tour
Located near the entrance to the Tendaiji Temple approach, Tekiseisha has their a showroom for display and sales of lacquerware. Not only you can touch and see their works, but also you can participate in a lacquerware production workshop.

Hirono town is the birthplace of “Nanbu Moguri,” a type of diving that has made a name for itself in the diving industry. The museum exhibits many materials on the history and techniques of helmet-type diving.
