– Summary –

Hachinohe Enburi is one of the signature rituals of Hachinohe City. It is a rice planting dance performed at the beginning of the year to entreat a good harvest, and is adored by many as a joyous performance that heralds the long-awaited arrival of spring after the harsh winter. The dancer, called Tayu, wears a gorgeous eboshi (a hat resembling a horse’s head) and shakes his head in a unique movement, which is called Suru. In between the Tayu’s performances, children and other performers perform a variety of blessings, including an accompanying musical dance, a Rice Planting Mansai dance, and a Nambu hand dance. In the early morning of February 17, about 30 Enburi groups from Hachinohe City and the surrounding towns will visit the Shinra Shrine at Mt. Chojasan and then parade to the Miyagi Shrine. During the parade, the entire group performs Suri simultaneously in the center of town, a spectacular sight to behold. From then until the 20th, Kadotsuke (Kadozuke) and various performances will be held.
