An art project to convey the memories of the great earthquake and local culture.

To pass on the memories of The Great East Japan Earthquake disaster to the next generation, we created tile art together with local residents and the general public in Sanriku. The artwork will be permanently displayed in spots where disaster prevention education is of high importance, and will serve to pass on the memories of the disaster to future generations of children. As a related event, we will be holding events where visitors can enjoy an adventure game that combines performances of Toramai, a local Geinoh, and actors with puzzle solving and treasure hunting. (Even if you miss registering for the event, you are welcome to visit and enjoy watching the local performing arts, the actors’ performances, and the participants’ adventures.)

Jodogahama Beach, located in the center of Sanriku Fukko (reconstruction) National Park and Sanriku Geopark, is Miyako’s representative scenic spot.
Its beauty, praised as “just like the Pure Land of Paradise,” was formed over a long period of time by volcanic eruptions, crustal movement, and sea water erosion. There are many attractions such as oddly shaped rocks and caves, which can be toured by sightseeing boats or small boats. In summer, it is a popular swimming spot and has been selected as one of the 100 best bathing spots by the Ministry of the Environment.

A natural hot spring with a panoramic view of Iwate Sanriku and an inn built by fishermen who love their hometown of Ofunato to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake. It won first place in both the “spectacular view category” and “seafood category” of the general election for hot spring hotels and hotels for two consecutive years, in 2022 and 2023. Enjoy the open-air bath with a spectacular view where you can feel the sea breeze and the sound of waves, and the fresh, seasonal fisherman’s cuisine that can only be enjoyed at that time of the year.
