Arrive at Shimakoshi Station, stroll around

The station was popular for its fairy-tale-like appearance and its name, Shimanokoshi, which was inspired by “Carbonado Island,” a volcanic island that appears in Kenji Miyazawa’s story The Biography of Gusuko Budori. However, on March 11, 2011, the station building was completely swept away by the massive tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Thanks to intensive restoration work, a new station building—designed to reflect the original style—was completed in July 2014. With its modern octagonal tower and other features reminiscent of the lost station, it has once again become a beloved symbol of recovery.
At the site of the former station (now within Shimanokoshi Fureai Park), a monument inscribed with a poem by Kenji Miyazawa, which withstood the tsunami, still stands in its original state.
