It was commissioned by the Yoshida family, who served as the head family (Ō-kimoiri) overseeing 24 villages in Kesen County under the Sendai Domain during the Edo period. The former Kesen County covers today’s Rikuzentakata City, Sumita Town, Ōfunato City, and Tōni in Kamaishi City.
During the Edo period, records show that the residence was used as lodging for inspectors dispatched by the shogunate and for visits by the lords of the Sendai Domain.
Although the residence was damaged by the tsunami, local residents collected the scattered materials, and with the combined efforts of many people and the skilled craftsmanship of Kesen carpenters, it was restored. At long last, it has been reopened to the public.
