The people of Ogawa community, who had no special performing arts of their own, were frustrated at being assigned only minor roles during the festivals of Kasshison Shrine (Dosen Shrine). In 1882-1883, they sent three young men to the Hijiri (Morinoshita) community in Kamigo Village, Tono, with which they had long had ties, to learn their Shishiodori. While helping with farm work for six months, each of them diligently practiced the flute, drum, and dance, and brought their skills back to Kogawa. Subsequently, the young people of Kogawa gathered and engaged in community-wide practice, which has been passed down to the present day. Kogawa Shishiodori elegantly depicts the playful movements of deer in the fields, reflecting the strong bond between residents and the deer that once thrived throughout the village.
