ABOUT
Sanriku International Arts Festival
Japan's Sanriku Coast, which was hard-hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake, is a treasure-trove of folk performing arts. There is no place quite like the Sanriku Area. In Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures alone, there are more than 2,000 performing groups. The Sanriku International Arts Festival has been held every year since 2014. Through this festival, we introduce audiences to the charms of Folk Performing Arts -- Geinoh -- which have been passed down for generations. Audience members from Japan and around the world have the opportunity to participate in cultural exchange activities at the festival, forging creative connections across the globe.
- Encounters -
An encounter is the first step in building a relationship.
Geinoh and our ways of life are born from the countless collisions and blending of cultures and forms.
People from the coast, mountains and villages come and go. These interactions slowly influence our way of life.
By showing reverence and offering prayers to the unknown, we come into contact with gods, beasts and spirits, and try on a non-human perspective. This is how art starts to take shape.
Again, we encounter Geinoh.
And local Geinoh will come into contact with Geinoh from other countries as well as contemporary art forms.
Through this mutual exchange we can better understand the past, renew the present and walk towards a new future in Sanriku.
