Born in Hokkaido, Sato is an internationally active composer and musician with a focus on chamber music integrating elements taken from diverse regions or ages. While highly acclaimed for his voice technique, which is rooted in his own memory of his grandmother’s Chinese poem recitation, Buddhist chant at temples, or Christian hymn at churches, he also plays the violin, the viola, the harmonium, and the percussions. His works also include music for film, dance and theatre, improvisation performance and community art project. Sato graduated from the Department of Musical Creativity and the Environment, Tokyo University of the Arts. He lives in Matsumoto city, Nagano prefecture.
