Kadonaka-gumi Toramai

Ofunato

In the Kamakura period (1185–1333), a ship loaded with mikoshi and ritual utensils arrived at Tomari beach in Massaki district. People first wondered, but later enshrined the utensils and shintai (body of a deity) in Tomari community. This is today’s Nakamori Kumano Shrine. Among the shrine’s numerous treasures, there is a shishigashira which is considered to show its sacred force to ward off the evil spirits and invite a rich harvest and haul. Therefore, the parishioners in Kadonohama community and Nakai community maintain the tradition of dedicating toramai (tiger dance) with the shishigashira at festivals.
