I visited Ofunato and Hachinohe to perform in “SanFes,” the Sanriku International Arts Festival. I was filled with feelings of gratitude and felt really comfortable in the unique atmosphere born from the encounter of Japanese and Korean folk performing artists. The encounter at Hachinohe, the encounter at Ofunato, the reunion at Maikawa. Each and every encounter really felt irreplaceable for us. I am grateful.

The sky, sea, and green that we felt at Hachinohe. Then, the red of the lamps and costumes, the various colors of the deep memories that we felt at Ofunato. I was filled with emotion when I saw the Topron players communicating and overcoming the language barrier.

I heartfully thank Urahama’s Mr. Chikara Furumizu for welcoming us performing artists from abroad, on the day of the Obon memorial services, the most important day of the year. Also, I felt that we overcame cultural differences between Japan and Korea, resounded with and communicated our feelings to each other when the dancers of the Nenbutsu Kenbai (Sword Dance) began dancing by running in intensely after Topron had danced in the middle of the pouring rain at the Ofunato port festival. It wasn’t just having the time on stage, but it was that we could have the time to learn their performing art, to sing together, and to drink together. It really became something of value to me. It progresses little by little, but I feel it is wonderful if Tohoku’s performing arts and Korea’s performing arts could continue to make relations with each other. I have heartfelt gratitude for all of those with whom I met.

Topron Pungmul Group, in the middle of their visit to Ofunato at the Sanriku International Arts Festival. Today, they were welcomed by everyone of the Urahama Nenbutst Kenbai (Sword Dance) and participated in the Obon holiday Kadozuke (Door-to-door entertainment). It was an overly valuable experience where they could perform the Korean Pungmul in the Obon event of each individual’s house, which has different conventions and circumstances. The Korean group fell in love with how cool the children and youth of the Urahama Kenbai were, as well as how cool the older members who support them are. Furthermore, they had a meeting for getting to know everyone from the Kenbai and the Shishi Odori (Deer Dance). Learning about everyone’s drum, talking about culture and the performing arts, eating. It ended with everyone dancing while passionately singing the beach folk song. Their exchange with the people of Urahama continued for the next day and the day after that.
